My Personal Gasoline Nightmare & July 4th Reflections on America, et. al.

Posted under Inspiration

This blog post was sent to me by the author, Roy King who politely asked if this can be posted on this website and I have decided, why not. So here goes his narrative piece…

Wednesday afternoon I was low on fuel. On the way to drop off a friend (whose car was in the shop) at Elon University library I made a $5 gas stop at $3.99 to get me to a ‘cheaper’ station. I noticed the local Elon station was at $3.96 and made a mental note to fill up there, saving all of 36 cents on a $45 fill-up, when returned to pick up Eric.

A couple of hours later I pulled up to the pump at Kangaroo Pantry #112. My tank fills from the driver’s side just behind the door. I jumped out, leaving my door open, popped a card into the slot, pushed NO for ‘Debit?’ and YES for ‘Receipt?’. The pump is an old type with separate hoses for each grade, with the ‘regular’ on the far right. As I have done a thousand times before, habitually following the instructions on the pump readout exactly, I removed the nozzle (with my right hand) and (with my left) flipped up the ‘ON’ lever beneath the nozzle hanger on the pump, as I turned to take a short step and remove my gas cap. Suddenly the nozzle jerked in my hand and gas spewed forth, full force, all over my open door panel, over and onto my dash, steering wheel, seat, console, radio/cd player and floor carpets before I could divert the hose and unlock the nozzle. Over a quarter gallon right into my car! Continue Reading »

Little Ways to Spread Global Warming Awareness

Posted under Global Warming Awareness

Global warming is a real threat whatever its causes are.  Most say it’s too much CO2 in the air and some say it’s the sun.  To me, I think it’s a combination of different factors.  Perhaps there are certain things that we can’t control but there are those that we can.

One thing we can do is to help spread awareness about global warming.  There are many ways to do so and we can start with our own homes.  I remember my wife telling our maid not to burn rubber.  I keep on telling my kids to recycle what can be recycled.  I myself wasn’t spared from being lectured as I remember a good friend calling my attention when I threw a paper airplane and just left it on the ground.

Another good way of spreading awareness is to make use of current events that are either directly or indirectly linked to global warming.  One such issue is the current global rice shortage.  I personally use it to tell my kids how global warming resulted into drought and eventually into this worldwide calamity.

If you want to take things a bit further, you can also start your own earth awareness blog and post your thoughts and ideas there.  Blogging is an effective tool in spreading the word worldwide and so we must all use it.  Joining online communities is another.

By know, I’m sure you already know that there are many ways to spread global warming awareness.  Sometimes it just needs a little imagination.

Celebrate Earth Day Everyday

Posted under Global Warming Awareness

On April 22nd we will celebrate Earth Day. Are we really celebrating Earth Day because some guy said so? If you ask me, we should celebrate Earth Day EVERYDAY.

On this upcoming Earth Day, let us spend our time with nature and think of what could happen if one day we will no longer have any of these natural resources, and think on what we should do to keep our planet alive, for us and for our children. Sometimes we will only know what we lost when we don’t have it anymore.

As seen in the book, Earth From Above: 365 Days of Sustainable Development as found in this Earth Day 2008 Promotional Items blog, you can see the beauty of the Earth that is now slowly being destroyed by our reckless usage of our Mother Earth’s resources, as well as authoritative text exploring current issues of sustainable development affecting the world: global warming, poverty, and biodiversity among them. I think it is a good book to read and share to everyone.

We can celebrate Earth Day everyday by not doing the following:

  • Waste Electricity, Water, Food.
  • Using old non-eco friendly materials.
  • Not reusing reusable items
  • Throwing garbage everywhere
  • Not replacing any consumed natural resource

If possible use Eco-Friendly products as much as possible Continue Reading »

Greenpeace Holds Global Day of Action (GDA) on December 8, 2007 - PhilippinesGreenpeace will hold it’s Global Day of Action (GDA) on December 8, 2007. This will be a global public initiative to address what many are considering the gravest threat we are facing today, climate change. This year, people and organizations around the world will highlight the Conference of Parties/Meeting of Parties (COP/MOP) on the Kyoto Protocol that will happen in Bali, Indonesia this December 2007.

In the Philippines, Greenpeace has been pushing the passage of the Renewable Energy Bill as the first decisive step of the Philippine government in honoring the Kyoto Protocol and ensuring the use of safe and cleaner energy sources. Continue Reading »

The Fart Side of Global Warming

Posted under Global Warming Awareness

Don’t have a cowSomeone commented about livestock flatulence here and I was surprised to see that some people are actually aware just how destructive farts and belches can be. LOL, not yours dear readers - I meant more of the bovine variant.

Yes - you read right - cow, goat, and sheep flatulence (cud-chewers mostly, as porcine flatulence is nigh negligible)  is a major contributor to global warming. Here are three simple reasons how … Continue Reading »
